Norman Vincent Peale's Positive Thinking

Change Negative Thoughts and Gain Energy and Faith

Jul 20, 2009 Sandra Williams

Norman Vincent Peale wrote The Power of Positive Thinking to help people persevere with proven techniques and examples of how to gain energy and peace of mind.

The Power of Positive Thinking was originally published in 1952 by Prentice-Hall (ISBN: 051708472). Peale relays timeless and effective steps and suggestions for overcoming poor health and lack of confidence or energy.

Believe in Yourself

The first chapter is about having faith and overcoming any possible inferiority complexes. There are ten detailed suggestions for developing faith and self-confidence.

Norman Vincent Peale often suggests using inspiring quotes from the bible for motivation. This is similar to using any other daily affirmations because there are enlightening lines in the bible that may help overcome obstacles if repeated enough.

That’s not to say that other daily affirmations wouldn’t be just as effective. The main thing is to develop both faith in a higher power and self. Focusing on assets, listing them and being grateful for them is another technique for appreciating life, increasing self- confidence and changing a negative attitude into a positive one.

Peaceful Mind Generates Power

To maintain a peaceful mind, it’s not surprising that Norman Vincent Peale advises that others pray and learn how to empty their minds. Simply emptying the mind is not enough however because it will soon be filled with more negative thoughts if they’re not replaced.

It’s also important to stop negative talking even if that means disassociating with friends temporarily. Sometimes it’s possible to lighten the mood, but if not, there’s no sense hanging around chaos and negativity.

Meditation

At least 15 minutes of silence is also suggested, which many others call meditation. Getting in touch with nature and shutting out worries has an amazing effect on individual energy levels. Since society has sped up, Peale points out how slowing down can actually be energizing.

Prayer Power & The Law of Attraction

This chapter goes beyond advising others to simply pray. It’s also necessary to picture the desired result, object or outcome until it becomes real to the subconscious. Praying to God is good, but it’s also important to take responsibility for creating happiness. There’s more detail about actualizing in The Power of Positive Thinking. The bottom line of the law of attraction and Peale’s philosophy is to expect the best in order to get it.

Also worth mentioning is a ten point worry breaking formula included in the Power of Positive Thinking. It discusses further how to develop faith and the importance of being surrounded by positive people.

Other useful subjects and chapters included in The Power of Positive Thinking include "Power to Solve Personal Problems", "How to Use Faith in Healing" and "How to Get People to Like You".

  • Norman Vincent Peale wrote Power of Positive Thinking simply to effectively communicate his common sense strategies with everyone. The examples and stories help show how the practical techniques bring results. It’s a truly effective book that convincingly communicates how all obstacles can be overcome.
