A Guide to Stopping Self Defeating Behavior

Aug 17, 2009 Sandra Williams

Stop Self Sabotage provides a very clear plan for eliminating negative behavior and replacing it. It would benefit anyone willing to take the time for self exploration.

Pat Pearson offers a practical guide full of strategies in Stop Self-Sabotage to eliminate negative beliefs that put limits on achievements.

She explains how people get what they think they deserve in her “Deserve Level Theory”. This could be a limited amount of money, happiness, health or love.

Sabotage Strategies

The main sabotage strategies people use are:

  • Throwing it Away: This is basically the belief that the outcome isn’t deserved so it ends up getting thrown away.
  • Denial: Ignore it and it will go away.
  • The Fatal Flaw: Addictions, anger problems, personality disorders or perfectionism interfere with progress.
  • Resignation: Someone may decide they won’t get or don’t deserve what they want anyway so don’t bother going after it.
  • Settling: This is another way of someone saying they’re not worthy, so they end up settling for less than what they would like.

Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem

Pat Pearson proceeds to explain how to raise “deserve levels” in Stop Self-Sabotage. First she explains the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem and the importance of balancing the two. There are simple suggestions for raising either in order to balance self-esteem or self-confidence at work or in relationships.

Self-Talk

Part 2 begins with self-talk and includes affirmations, visualization and the importance of putting it all into action. The more detailed the vision and plan, the more likely it is to be successful. Detailed examples and methods are given in Stop Self-Sabotage.

Self-Nurturing

There’s also excellent advice for building up a supportive support system along with self-nurturing methods. These self-nurturing suggestions provide the opportunity to parent the self in a more positive less critical manner.

  • Stop Self-Sabotage (Pat Pearson, Publisher: McGraw-Hill, 2008, ISBN-13: 9780071603195) is an effective resource that will eventually bring about positive changes as long as the reader takes the actions suggested.

The exercises and quizzes included are enlightening and encourage positive growth. For example one is called “Identifying Your Deserve Level”. The chapter following this quiz is called “Deserve Dilemmas” helping to explore obstacles such as the ability to ask for help, fears and limiting beliefs.

At the end there are inspiring “Deserve Level Success Stories.” While many of them focus on business, sales and monetary rewards, improved relationships are also rewards.
